The Journal of Ethics in Antiquity and Christianity (JEAC) is an open access publication that fosters dialogue between exegetical, Judaic, and patristic scholarship and philosophical as well as systematic theological approaches to pressing ethical questions of our time. By doing so, it brings the ethical dimensions of ancient texts into conversation with contemporary ethical debates. Ethical questions not only cut across the disciplines today, they were also central to many discourses in antiquity. The ways in which ancient texts engage ethical themes can offer insights that go far beyond a mere historical understanding of religious traditions. They provide both methodological and substantive contributions to discussions in there and now. However, justice is done neither to the ancient texts nor to contemporary ethical discourse when isolated arguments or motifs are simply transferred from past to present. A careful interpretation of the ethical dimensions of biblical and extra-biblical texts in light of their original contexts and discursive frameworks is essential for articulating their relevance to contemporary discourse in a meaningful way.
The Journal of Ethics in Antiquity and Christianity honors this plurality of voices across time and disciplines by drawing on a broad spectrum of academic fields and textual forms. Each issue addresses a specific ethical question through contributions from both theological and non-theological perspectives, includes a dialogical exchange between two opposing positions, and features miscellanies and book reviews. To ensure wide accessibility, the journal is published open access. Contributions, which may be submitted in either English or German, are invited by the editorial board under the category Articles and are subject to a double-blind peer review process to ensure both scholarly rigor and interdisciplinary accessibility. This peer-review procedure applies exclusively to Articles, not to other types of submissions.
